Windows 7
So what is all the hoopla with Windows 7? Microsoft sure spent a lot of money on advertising the new OS Version stating how much better it was going to be. Obivously we are all curious as to how it’s going to perform. So my fiance & I purchased a brand new Gateway notebook last night from Best Buy. It was small cute and all, though we were very unsatisfied with the Operating System. I was excited to try out this New Windows 7, hoping for miracles I guess. After only playing around with it for oh, 10 mins if that even, we were both disappointed. First of all on the Notebooks, which are low in price, we paid $356 with tax from Best Buy, I guess you get what you paid for. Of course we went for the least expensive not knowing that a Notebook is mostly only for surfing the internet & not a whole lot more. The Notebooks are installed with only Windows 7 Starter Edition, which is a joke. Basically just your standard OS so the computer isnt just a DOS prompt. You can not even customize your desktop. Really, do we all want to be starring at the Windows symbol all day long? Not me I dont know about you. Also there’s the funny thing about only running 3 apps at once. We actually didnt have a problem with running more than 3. Though I have seen a lot of blogs that state you can only run 3 on Windows 7 Starter. So maybe they fixed or changed that. Not sure, all I know is we decided to return the Notebook they very next day. Very unsatisfied with an OS that will not allow us to do anything other than surf the web for the most part. If we would of paid for the upgrade edition, than we should of just paid the extra money and had a laptop that would do the functions needed for the modern day customer. www.thebootcd.com

How To Enable/Disable Autorun
If your Boot CD does not automatically run when you insert the disk into your computer, you may need to enable your autorun feature within Windows. Follow these instructions to enable/ disable it on various versions of Windows:
How To Enable/Disable Autorun (Windows 95/98/Me)
1. Access the System Properties Dialog. Using Control Panel: My Computer: Properties or Explorer: My Computer: Properties.
2. Select the Device Manager tab.
3. Select the CD-ROM folder.
4. Select the entry for your CD-ROM drive.
5. Select Properties.
6. Select the Settings tab.
7. Turn on or off the Auto insert notification option.
8. Select OK.
9. Select OK
How To Enable/Disable Autorun (Windows NT/2000)
1. Start RegEdit (regedt32.exe).
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Cdrom.
3. Edit the Autorun value to ’1′ to enable autorn, and ’0′ to disable autorun.
4. Close RegEdit
How To Enable/Disable Autorun (Windows XP)
1. Open Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows + “e” key.
2. Right-click the desired CD-ROM and select Properties from the menu.
3. Select the AutoPlay tab.
4. Select each item from the pulldown list and for the Action to perform, select “Take no action” to disable autorun, or pick the apporpriate action to take if enabling autorun.
5. Select OK.
How To Enable Autorun for Other Removable Media
Autorun can be enabled or disabled for all Removable media types, such as a floppy or Zip disk. Windows systems are configured to enable CD Notification, other removable media are by default disabled.
The System Properties User interface only exposes the CD Enable or Disable selection. The setting reflected in this dialog makes an entry in the System Registry. It is in this same location that other media types are configured.
Notes:
1. Modifiying the Registry is not for the inexperienced user. Anyone will tell you, be VERY careful.
2. The modifications made in this case use Hex not Decimal numbers. If you are unfamiliar with the Registry or the characteristics of base numbering and Hex, studying these topics prior to making these modifications is advisable.
To Modify these Registry Settings, Use Regedit and navigate to the following Key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Policies
Explorer
“NoDriveTypeAutoRun”
The default value for the setting is 95 0 0 0. Change the first byte to 91. Restart the computer to make the new setting take effect. You may have to right-click on the floppy and choose AutoPlay from the menu to see the AutoPlay behavior.
Additional Technical Info
The first byte defines which drive types to EXCLUDE from Autorun behavior. The hex value of the byte is the sum of all of the drive type values to exclude + 128.
DRIVE_UNKNOWN 1
DRIVE_NO_ROOT_DIR 2
DRIVE_REMOVABLE 4 (floppy disks and removable cartridges)
DRIVE_FIXED 8 (hard disks)
DRIVE_REMOTE 16 (network drives)
DRIVE_CDROM 32 (CD-ROMs)
DRIVE_RAMDISK 64
The default configuration excludes UNKNOWN (1), REMOVABLE (4) and REMOTE (16) which would be 16 + 4 + 1 + 128 = 149, which is hex 95. If you take out REMOVABLE you get 16 + 1 + 128 = 145, which is hex 91.
The calculation for this value is 1 + 4 + 16 + 128 = 149. 149 Decimal is 95 Hex
The new calculation is 1 + 16 + 128 = 145. 149 Decimal is 91 Hex
You may have to restart for the system to recognize a floppy or Zip as an Autoplay drive. If your floppy drive does not show a custom icon or AutoPlay in the menu when right-clicked, double-click on the icon for your computer on the desktop and press F5 to refresh the information in the Explorer window. Zips and floppies will not autolaunch when media is inserted. You must double-click their icon or right-click and choose AutoPlay from the menu.
What is Spyware?
What is Spyware? Is a type of malware that is installed on computers and collects information about users without their knowledge. It is a piece of software that snoops around your computer reporting back via the internet all specific information about you and your machine. This snooping takes place all the time, whenever your machine is connected to the net.
How does Spyware infect your computer in the first place? Once in a while, you get these innocent-looking, eyelash-fluttering, come-hither pop-ups that you, in one of your magnanimous moods, click on. The spyware programs that sneak through the side-door do not ask for your permission. They simply start downloading themselves onto your machine as soon as do you visit a particular website or view an HTML email message. So remember to never click on pop ups or open email attachments from people you do not know.
What does Spyware do once it’s installed on your computer? Spyware can log all the keys you pressed on your keyboard along with the window or page you used, carefully filing away each page’s URL in different cyber-slots – especially the ones where you are keying in passwords, credit card numbers, etc. Then your entire screens may get “captured” and stored and forwarded – so what your eyes are seeing can also be seen by Spyware controllers. There are others that alter your Web browser’s home page or search page. Even if you change these settings back to the original restarted you machine as soon as you start surfing again, you find the settings have changed back again! The “adware” strain of this nuisance, besides collecting your passwords also collects your email address list, your web-browsing history, your online buying habits, perhaps your credit card numbers too, your machine’s hardware and software configuration, and even your name, date of birth, and sex as well!
The Spyware collects your important information day after day. It does not just get it once and then stop. After a collection it takes up your CPU and memory, latches on to your bandwidth to connect to the internet in the background, connects quietly to the site of its master and dumps all your information in their data banks. You just think your connection is a bit slow today. When you notice your internet connections slowing down a lot & lagging, that’s when you know it’s time to do a good cleaning & scanning of your hard drive for potential infections.
How do you get to know that Spyware has attacked your machine? The tell-tale signs are very obvious. Pop-up advertisements begin to flood your screen all of a sudden, and you have to spend a lot of time closing these little windows. Your web browser home page changes to some site that you are quite sure you hadn’t asked for and, even after resetting it back to your original page, the home page reverts back. There is suddenly a new toolbar in the browser. Your machine suddenly begins taking longer time to perform tasks that were a breeze for it earlier It is acting slow & doing unpredictable things. Last, but not least, the computer begins to reboot or hang every now and then – again uncharacteristic behavior for your pc.
What do you do to get rid of Spyware? The best thing to do is install a good anti-spyware program onto your computer to prevent attacks & a spyware from installing itself onto your computer in the first pace. Another good pre-caution to take is run various anti-spyware scans on your hard drive once a week /month. Anti-spyware programs are all different & sometimes only detect certain strains of spyware. Of course these clever little programmers are always coming out with new types of infections. So a good rule if thumb is to run multiple cross checks with multiple anti-spyware programs so you can be assured that your computer stays clean.

What is a Keylogger?
A Keylogger is a type of Malware that invisibly records all keyboard activity. Everything that is typed into your computer is recorded ex: password, socials, security questions & more.
The scary part is that it is absolutely invisible to all operating systems (in Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista processes as well) It runs in the background without you ever knowing it. Quietly recording all of your information for thieves to keep and use later to hack into your accounts. The thing is that it doesn’t matter how complex you make your passwords to your bank accounts, because they have it recorded, every keystroke you make.
Its obvious why you do not want this harmful program on your computer. Take these steps to take to protect your vital information:
1) Do not open spam email. Do not even click on it, if you are unsure about an email, delete it right away without viewing it. Also if your email inbox has a preview mode, where you can see part of an email message, turn that off. You could harm your computer by viewing even a partial part of an infected email.
2) Do not download attachments if its from someone you do not know.
3) Do not click on pop ups. Most web browsers have anti pop up software on them. Though, if you see ads popping up, install another program to prevent that. Also be weary of pop ups that look like Microsoft Windows messages that say you need to update your software. Microsoft only has messages that come from your task bar, not in the form of a pop up.
4) Make sure your firewall is turned ON. To do that, click on the red shield on your task bar. Windows Security Center will come up. Firewall is first on the list, make sure its green and says ON.
5) Run a full system antivirus scan weekly

Trojans -Computer Virus
A Trojan horse, or trojan for short, is a term used to describe malware that appears, to the user, to perform a desirable function but, in fact, facilitates unauthorized access to the user’s computer system. The term comes from the Trojan Horse story in Greek mythology. Trojan horses are not self-replicating which distinguishes them from viruses and worms. Additionally, they require interaction with a hacker to fulfill their purpose. The hacker need not be the individual responsible for distributing the Trojan horse. It is possible for hackers to scan computers on a network using a port scanner in the hope of finding one with a Trojan horse installed
Trojan horses are designed to allow a hacker remote access to a target computer system. Once a Trojan horse has been installed on a target computer system it is possible for a hacker to access it remotely and perform operations. The operations that a hacker can perform are limited by user privileges on the target computer system and the design of the Trojan horse itself.
Operations which could be performed by a hacker on a target computer system include:
Use of the machine as part of a Botnet (e.g. to perform Distributed Denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks)
Data Theft (e.g. passwords, security codes, credit card information)
Installation of software (including other malware)
Downloading of files
Uploading of files
Deletion of files
Modification of files
Keystroke logging
Viewing the user’s screen
So why are trojans or trojan horses so dangerous? The basic idea is that you download a program, for example one that you think is some sort a game demo. When you run the demo, to your surprise, nothing happens. Or so you thought. What may have happened is that you’ve just unwittingly run some form of program that has planted itself on your hard drive. Perhaps it’s going to be a very basic application, and simply delete some files on your system. Perhaps it’s an even more sinister tool that will actually give other people full access to your hard drive and system. Sounds ridiculous? It happens literally every single day, to computer users all around the world.
In short, if you want to keep your PC safe, follow the three golden rules:
• Use a good anti trojan application, that offers regular trojan definition updates. Use the software regularly, and keep it up to date.
• Use a good anti virus application, that offers regular virus definition updates. Use the software, and keep it up to date.
•Keep your operating system up to date with security fixes.
